Their wines come from the vineyards closest to the barn and tasting room. Every year their wines get better and better. Round Pond Estate: 875 Rutherford Rd.Rutherford 707.302.2575 www.roundpond.comHrs: 11-4appt Thu-MonTF: $$$ Wines: Cab Sauv, Nebbiolo. Notes: This family owns hundreds of acres of vines in Rutherford. Most of the grapes are sold to other wineries. They also grow olives and their press is across the way. The rather spectacular winery was created for the small percentage of grapes that they hold to for their own tasting room. It only figures that they hold onto the best. The tasting room is beautiful and elegant, the staff is knowledgeable and the only hard part is getting an appointment, since they make limited wines and are only open on certain days. However, it is worth the effort because this is one of Rutherford's great wine estates.

One of the most elegant gift shops in the Valley and theespresso bar is a wonderful place to relax amid a day of tasting. You can even sail a boat in the fountains. The wines are solid, well-made and satisfying. The staff is one of the best in the valley and the whole feel is gracious and special. The name Rubicon comes from the story of Julius Caesar crossing in the Italy from Gaul. Because this action would make him a rebel and there was no going back. Once Francis made his first wine there was no going back. As big as the winery is, it is still run like a family business, which explains the loyal staff. This is a personal favorite.
