The stone barrel building is from the 1800’s and is the oldest winery building in the Stag's Leap District. This is a charming, friendly, informal setting and a real working farm. The Regusci family manages vineyards of some very high-quality wineries. A certain amount of their land is leased out, although they manage it. Their wines come from the vineyards closest to the barn and tasting room. Every year their wines get better and better. They have a great staff and a beautiful property and it is one of our favorite places to bring clients. They also have cute dogs, but please don't feed them.

Notes: Dr. Revana is a physician and when he purchased the property he put together a great group, vineyard manager, winemaking team and tasting room staff. It is a small winery just off the road above St. Helena, and the winery is right next to the very beautifully designed tasting room. The wines are excellent and it is a sit-town tasting with a lot of style. The tasting is not overly long, so it fits in well with other appointments.

Vineyards climb the hills around the winery and the tasting starts in the cave at a conference table. It then heads outside to a fairy circle of Redwood Trees. The wines are complex and beautifully crafted. The staff is personable and knowledgeable. They have a very loyal customer base which causes only a small problem, late in the season they can run out of wine, so call them first.

Wines: Cab Sauv, Nebbiolo. Notes: This family owns hundreds of acres of vines in Rutherford. Most of the grapes are sold to other wineries. They also grow olives and their press is across the way. The rather spectacular winery was created for the small percentage of grapes that they hold to for their own tasting room. It only figures that they hold onto the best. The tasting room is beautiful and elegant, the staff is knowledgeable and the only hard part is getting an appointment, since they make limited wines and are only open on certain days. However, it is worth the effort because this is one of Rutherford's great wine estates.

Notes: The Inglenook Castle was the center of the Niebaum Estate that Francis Ford Coppola spent years reassembling. One of the most elegant gift shops in the Valley and the espresso bar is a wonderful place to relax amid a day of tasting. You can even sail a boat in the fountains. The wines are solid, well-made and satisfying. The staff is one of the best in the valley and the whole feel is gracious and special. The name Rubicon comes from the story of Julius Caesar crossing in the Italy from Gaul. Because this action would make him a rebel and there was no going back. Once Francis made his first wine there was no going back. As big as the winery is, it is still run like a family business, which explains the loyal staff. This is a personal favorite.

707.963.544 www.rutherfordgrove.com Hrs: 10-4:30 TF: $10
Wines: Cab Sauv, Merlot, Sauv Blanc, Petite Sirah, Sangiovese. Notes: A really nice family winery with a great staff, good wines and a convenient location. Picnic tables.

You can picnic at tables under hundred year old olive trees. When the property was first developed they
discovered the trees, but had no idea of who planted them. The owner's wife made it her mission to restore the grove. They have nice indoor & outdoor tasting areas that can accommodate groups. They do a great tour, Saturdays from 11:30-3:30 on the half hour, Weekdays 11:30-1:30-3:30. They have a classy gift collection. There is some talk of making the picnic area by appointment so you could call ahead. Also call ahead with groups. Great staff, great wines.

Rutherford Ranch: 1680 Silverado Trail St. Helena
707.967.5120 www.rutherfordranch.com Hrs: 10-4:30 TF: $$ Wines: Cab Sauv, Chard, Merlot, Sauv Blanc, Zin, White Zin, Port, Muscato, Notes: Various other labels are tasted here including Round Hill.
