Amazing Sonoma Wineries

When we first came to the North Bay we lived a five minute walk from the Historic Sonoma Plaza. So the first place we explored was the Sonoma Valley, and those wineries were the first entries in our research for our travel books. When Ralph got a part time job with a tour company to do the research, even though they were ten minutes south of the Plaza, seventy percent of the tours he was sent on were in Napa. Why? Because Napa is a genius when it comes to marketing. But that doesn't mean Sonoma is not amazing, it is, in ways that Napa is not. Sonoma is more feminine, complicated and subtle. In some ways its more romantic because its many valleys are smaller and more intimate. Also, the most interesting parts of Sonoma are in the northern county which is farther from San Francisco. But it's not that much farther, especially considering that Napa's tasting fees can equal a dinner out at a nice restaurant, and Sonoma fees are more reasonable with a few ambitious exceptions.
In recent years Sonoma wine tourism has continued to grow, while Napa has stalled. Why? The wines and experiences Sonoma is best at are exactly what the current generations love. The wines are lighter and healthier, and the wineries are mostly small and family owned. Also, while Napa is centered one long, broad valley, Sonoma has five very different areas. They start, as so much does at the Bay with Los Carneros. Then north from there through through the Plaza and Sonoma Valley. From there turn towared the North West for the charming Russian River Valley with their Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. To the east of there is the lovely Zinfandels of Dry Creek Valley and the Hot Spot, the town of Healdsburg. Then to the northeast of town is the sunny Alexander Valley, with its merlot and Cabernet vines. Scroll down to see a list of some of the Sonoma wineries we love. In the Alexander Valley the Jordan winery is one of the three great wineries there. For years it was in a class of its until Stonestreet and Silver Oak began making wine there. https://www.jordanwinery.com/

This List is a Work in Progress. We will be adding more as the season progresses and we can make time.

The VJB winery and market is a must visit in the Sonoma Valley. This wonderful family business produces excellent wines, including many Italian varietals. Their market with its tables in the central courtyard is our favorite place to stop for lunch during a tour. https://vjbcellars.com/
The Belemonte family also has a second winery called Wellington that is charming in a very Italian style. The wines are light and fresh and the experience delightful. https://wellingtoncellars.com/
This picture is from the Sonoma Valley's Hamel winery. They are probably the most expensive in the valley at $75 per person, the last time time I checked. But it is a very experience. https://hamelfamilywines.com/
Chris Loxton, of Loxton cellars is one of the most respected, and like wine makers in the valley for numerous reason. The winery is very relaxed and convenient in the Sonoma Valley. The wines are very good an unique, and Chris is usually there pouring for guest. https://www.loxtonwines.com/
